Co-Counselling

(For information about what co-counselling is, see the Wikipedia entry on Co-Counselling International) Ann completed the Fundamentals of Co-Counselling course with Co-Counselling International in the Autumn of 1985. Over the next years she was actively involved both locally and attending national events. Tony Booth writes: I first met Ann early on in my co-counselling career, probably sometime in the 1980s. My first specific memory is of crossing swords with her when we were both very clear that each one of us wanted to be the East Midlands contact person. A compromise was worked out and later we got to know each other better when we attended a ‘how to teach Co-Co Fundamentals’ course in Sandwell Birmingham. Soon after we were co-teaching Fundamentals in Leicester and ran several of these successfully. Eventually I decided that the effort in getting enough punters together was not worth the rewards. On sharing this information with Ann I received one of the most thorough tongue lashings of my life as Ann was convinced that this was a lie and I just intended to desert her and teach Fundamentals with someone else; also a woman, who was younger than Ann! On this occasion she was wrong and eventually forgave me. We had many sessions and other coco related activities together that gave both of us much pleasure and support. One of the things that we had in common, I later realised, was the fact that both of us were much driven by fear. Ann changed her career whilst I knew her from accountant to teacher, going from saving money for the rate payers of Derby to attempting to improve the lives of some of Leicester’s most challenging pupils. She managed to continue this latter commitment until well past the normal retirement age with a tenacity that was typical of her. It is some years since Ann was actively involved in Co-counselling and many of today’s co-counsellors may not have known her. I’m sure that those who did will miss her.
